Vertical or horizontal – maximum versatility with INVENT mixers
The operators of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Heusenstamm, Germany, commissioned INVENT to renew the mixers in their biological treatment stage.

INVENT’s HYPERCLASSIC®–Mixer has become indispensable in wastewater treatment plants and consistently impresses with its effective and energy-efficient mixing of clarification tanks. While this vertical mixer is mainly used in rectangular and circular tanks, horizontal flow accelerators are usually installed in circulation tanks. INVENT also offers a suitable solution for this: the CYBERFLOW®-Accelerator was specially developed for the energy-efficient generation of horizontal flow in circulation tanks and optimized in the INVENT flow laboratories using state-of-the-art measurement technology and simulation methods.
Challenges at the Heusenstamm wastewater treatment plant
The municipal wastewater treatment plant in Heusenstamm, near Frankfurt am Main, replaced the mixers in its denitrification tanks in 2023. The tanks consist of a circulation tank measuring 31.5 m x 16 m with a water depth of 2.32 m and a rectangular tank measuring 22.5 m x 9 m with a water depth of 5 m.
The solids (sludge flocs, sludge, fibers, sand, etc.) in the pretreated wastewater were to be kept in suspension in the denitrification tank by a slow-running mixer with a horizontal shaft. At the same time, an average flow velocity of 0.2-0.25 m/s had to be ensured and disruptive sedimentation prevented while ensuring vortex-free operation. Thanks to its well-thought-out design, INVENT prevailed over the competition with its CYBERFLOW®-Accelerators for the circulation tank and the HYPERCLASSIC®-Mixer for the rectangular tank.
Customization of the flow accelerator
In the case of the wwtp Heusenstamm, the CYBERFLOW®-Accelerator with its specially developed, smaller glass and carbon fiber-reinforced propeller shape is used for the circulation tank due to the shallow water depth. The four-bladed propeller with a diameter of 1.8 m opens up further possibilities for use in circulation tanks.
The CYBERFLOW®-Accelerator was tailored precisely to the customer’s requirements for the Heusenstamm plant. To ensure installation in filled basins, the steel-coated base plate of the foot construction was correctly positioned using a diver and aligned via the guide pipe, then bolted to the floor.
